Fashion & Textiles: Paper manipulation (2)

For this task I was asked to bring in 5 fashion cut outs, I decided to use both male and female in order to have a range to work with. I believe the purpose was this task was to explore the different possibilities on a smaller scale before then actually making a final garment/piece.

I enjoyed this task as it was interesting to see how my samples from the previous day could be manipulated to form something completely different. I aspired to make each cut out different from the other to create a range of unique pieces. The most successful from the pieces above is the last one where I created a red colour wash on the printer which gives the design more of an edge. I also think it works best because it pushes the boundaries the most.

Instead of creating new pieces I decided to use the initial cut outs and add illustrations to them. The use of illustration in the above designs made a huge difference as they looked more interesting/exciting aesthetically. In addition to this I also like the contrast between the two designs as one is much more sophisticated/sleek whereas the other has less structure to it.

I began to explore removing and adding to the cut outs via illustration. In the first design I attempted to experiment by following the outline of the model by simply drawing a stick figure then adding detail to the head. The issue with this design is that it works in theory but not in practice. I think it would be quite difficult to construct as I would have to take how it would be attached to the body into consideration amongst other things. In the second design I looked at removing the focus from the model by blacking her out and simply leaving a silhouette to highlight the illustration that features behind her. I thought the effect of this was quite strong visually as the silhouette figure makes the illustrations pop.

This is was my favourite illustration piece of the day because of the simplicity of it. I decided to photocopy the cut out in black and white to explore the effects of colour more. The headpiece in this illustration is also a photocopy of one of the initial samples I made. I think the use of this contrasts well with the patterns outlined around the cutout. I decided to place my focus on headpieces, my aim was to create something loud and dramatic without being over the top. I think I was successful in doing so as the size and shape is in proportion to one another.

  1. From your final image I feel like you have a certain flare for headpieces, I like how you've left the sculptural manipulation of the paper do all the work as a garment. Your use of illustrations and colour don't overcrowd the headpiece, but accentuate it by framing the collage and the figure from the magazine. I also like how you've left the borders of the paper, it hasn't restricted your collage.

  2. The picture were the model was facing backwards and the background consist of three circle windows really stand out for me. The pointy edges of the hat really compliments with the round windows. Nice choice of background
