FMP: week 2

Creative making week

Initially I was unsure how I could use the creative making week to my advantage in terms of being playful and experimental as well as continuing to work towards developing my final major project.

I began this week by collaborating with 3 individuals, 2 from the lens based media pathway and 1 from the graphics pathway. Collectively, we decided to make our project a combination of each of our final major projects. As my project is based of freedom within the context of having a disability I chose for my keywords to be perception and disability. Jenai's keywords were  perception and revealing. Connie's words were reveal and characterisation. Jess' word was chance. These keywords led us to the sentence: 'What if the perception of your personality when revealed in a true light is left down to chance.' The sentence seemed quite abstract to begin with however, as we brainstormed ideas the solution we landed at was very simple.

We decided to make our project a social experiment by utilising the objects from the kit, we chose to use the bottles as characters that represent groups of people that are negatively stereotyped and have assumptions made about them. We also decided to use the concept of external and internal truths to strengthen our concept. Another strengthening factor of our project was the use of contrast between the internal (inside the bottle) and the external (the sock) as it worked to refute perceptions. For example the internal of the 'young' bottle was filled with black paint to depict depression whereas the sock over it was colourful, bold and vibrant which are often associated with being young.

In terms of the outcome of the social experiment, it went as planned/expected as we received the response we thought we would which is evidence that the ideas we have about characterisation are correct.

Overall, I found this week quite fun as it encouraged me to be playful and experimental. This approach would be beneficial for my final major project as it makes the process more enjoyable. In regards to my final major project, this week was very helpful as it enabled me to apply the concepts I have for my project in a visual manner. The visual outcomes for the creative making week are quite simple however, I feel that they are very strong in terms of the concept behind them. Although less is more, I aspire to produce an outcome that is strong both conceptually as well as visually.
